(A collection of unusable letters can happen in Boggle too – it’s just that it’s much more likely here, because words made with less common letters make more powerful attacks.)Īt the lower levels, you can get by with three and four letter words, though the battles take longer that way. You may find yourself with a collection of letters such as J, V, R, U, U, U, I, I, M, F, O, Qu, L, Z, K, and A. But also unlike Boggle, the letters do not appear in anything close to their frequency in common English words. Unlike Boggle (and unlike the original Bookworm game), you aren’t limited to contiguous letters. And you have to put together letters to spell words. The letter grid looks just like the one in Boggle, with four rows of four letters. This is both a word game and a role-playing game, you see, and while potions and treasures do help you in battles, what helps the most is being able to put together words of six, seven, eight or more letters. Partly this is because it’s quite a challenge to come up with enough long words to defeat the higher level monsters. Bookworm Adventure turns out to have a lot more to it, and it will be a long time before he runs out of enemies to vanquish. Or, like Puzzle Hero that he just got with the birthday money from his great grandmother, he spends hours playing it and finishes the game within a day or so. Some games seem exciting at the beginning but don’t hold his interest. That’s how we ended up with Bookworm Adventure. But occasionally he likes one so much he asks me to buy it. When time is up, he goes on to the next game. Since I can’t buy my younger son all the computer games he would like, he has taken advantage of the huge number of trial versions available for download. I prefer to develop a good strategy for solving cryptograms, or Sudoku for a change of pace. Usually I do crossword puzzles in the living room while they play video games downstairs, but occasionally I hear them discussing strategy as to what powers and attacks will be most effective against a particular adversary. My husband and sons like adventure games.
